Bloodstone
Bloodstone is a green chalcedony sprinkled with red spots resembling blood. Also called heliotrope, some Medieval Christians carved scenes of the crucifixion and martyrs from bloodstone, causing it to be sometimes knows as martyr’s stone. One legend of its origin says that it was formed by drops of Christ’s blood at the foot of the cross. Bloodstone was well known to the Aztecs who used it to regulate blood flow. Finely powdered bloodstone is still used as a medicine and aphrodisiac in India.
